25 Die, 14 Go Missing After Canoe Capsizes in Nigeria

(MENAFN) Officials confirmed on Sunday that at least 25 people lost their lives in a canoe disaster in Nigeria.
The accident happened late Saturday when a canoe carrying 52 individuals overturned while traveling from Adiyani in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa state to Garbi in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe state.

Authorities reported that 13 passengers were rescued, while an initial assessment indicated that 14 others remain unaccounted for.

Mohammed Goje, executive secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Agency, told a news agency that the victims had been engaged in fishing, farming, and other local economic activities when the vessel capsized mid-journey.

“The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency can confirm the unfortunate canoe mishap that occurred along the Nguru waterway,” Goje said. “Our search and rescue teams are still working in collaboration with security agencies and local community volunteers to find those missing.”
